Full Biography

Prof. Dr. Adina Binti Abdullah is a Professor at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. With over a decade of experience in primary healthcare delivery, health systems research, and the development and implementation of digital health interventions in Malaysia, she has established herself as a leader in her field. Dr. Adina is a family medicine specialist and has built strong networks with policy, health system, and community stakeholders throughout her career. Dr. Adina graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) in 1997 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1999 from the University of Nottingham, UK. She furthered her education at Universiti Malaya, obtaining a Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) and a PhD. Her interest in digital health began after she joined the core team responsible for implementing the Hospital Information System at the Ministry of Health Hospitals in 2004. This experience led her to participate in the development and implementation of home blood pressure telemonitoring, a project realized through a Universiti Malaya spin-off company, UMCH Sdn Bhd. In addition to her academic and research roles, Dr. Adina is a committee member for the non-profit organization Digital Health Malaysia and co-leads the mHealth and telehealth division at the Universiti Malaya eHealth Unit. Since 2012, she has led research and published extensively on telemonitoring, patients’ perspectives on digital health, health literacy prevalence, and patients’ use of online health information for medication decisions. Her research has involved close collaboration with stakeholders from the Malaysian Ministry of Health, academic institutions, and industry partners. Dr. Adina has held several administrative positions, including Head of Department at the Department of Primary Care Medicine from June 2021 to December 2023, member of the Department Research Committee since January 2016, and member of the COVID-19 task force and Drug and Therapeutics Committee at University Malaya Medical Center from August 2021 to December 2023. She also served as co-lead of the mHealth and Telehealth division at the UM eHealth Unit in 2021. Her professional memberships include being an editorial board member (2024-2025), life member of the Malaysia Society of Hypertension, research module mentor for Advanced Training in Family Medicine (2023-2025), member of the National Specialist Register since 2014, member of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia since 2012, member of the Family Medicine Specialist Association since 2010, and committee member of the Malaysian Primary Care Research Group (2020-2021). Dr. Adina has received several awards, including Best Oral Presentation at the 19th ASM of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension in 2024, the UMMC Research Carnival Video Competition 2023, the Excellence Service Award from University of Malaya in 2015, and a Poster Award (3rd Prize) at the 12th Annual Scientific Conference of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension in 2015. Her research interests include the COSMOS COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring System and health literacy in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. She has led and contributed to numerous research projects, such as the AI-Trust project on patients’ trust and acceptance of artificial intelligence for hypertension management, the DESC study on empowering dengue patients, and several COVID-19 related teleconsultation and symptom monitoring projects. She has also been involved in international collaborations, including projects funded by the World Heart Federation, University of Sydney, and NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health. Dr. Adina has served as a consultant for projects such as the validation of blood pressure-enabled smartwatch-based devices for Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and the Virtual Patient Project at University of Malaya. She has presented papers on artificial intelligence in primary care and digital health innovations at national conferences. Her extensive publication record covers topics such as digital health, telemonitoring, health literacy, online health information-seeking, and the use of artificial intelligence in primary care. Through her research, teaching, and leadership, Prof. Dr. Adina Binti Abdullah continues to make significant contributions to primary care medicine and digital health in Malaysia.
