Abdul Rashid bin Abdul Rahman, MBChB, Ph.D, FRCPI, FRCPEd, FNHAM, FAsCC, is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant Physician at An Nur Specialist Hospital, Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia. He also serves as Visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Born on March 18, 1959, he has built a distinguished career in medicine, clinical pharmacology, and cardiovascular research, with a professional journey spanning several decades and continents. Dr. Abdul Rashid began his education at English College Johore and Royal Military College in Malaysia before moving to the United Kingdom, where he attended City of Bath Technical College and subsequently the University of Sheffield Medical School, earning his MBChB in 1984. He furthered his academic pursuits with a Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Dundee, focusing on clinical studies related to the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System and cation metabolism. His early professional appointments included roles as Resident House Officer in Surgery and Medicine at Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, UK. He then returned to Malaysia as a Medical Officer and Trainee Lecturer in Medicine at Penang General Hospital and Universiti Sains Malaysia. His academic and clinical career advanced rapidly, with positions such as Honorary Registrar and Research Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee, and Registrar in Cardiovascular and Internal Medicine at hospitals in the UK. Dr. Abdul Rashid’s academic appointments in Malaysia include Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor of Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at Universiti Sains Malaysia and Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences. He has also held adjunct and visiting professorships at the International Islamic University and Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences. Since 2014, he has been the Medical Director and Senior Consultant Physician at An Nur Specialist Hospital, while also serving as Visiting Consultant at Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur. He has held numerous administrative roles, including Deputy Dean of Research and Post Graduate Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Director of the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Vice President of Research and Commercialisation at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences, and Dean of the Center of Graduate Studies, Research and Commercialisation at the same institution. Dr. Abdul Rashid’s research interests focus on cardiovascular medicine, cardiovascular clinical pharmacology, and the clinical evaluation of herbal products. He has been principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous national and international research grants, covering topics such as hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, pharmacogenetics, and drug metabolism. He has supervised a significant number of research students at the master's and doctoral levels, contributing to the development of future leaders in medicine and pharmacology. He is a prolific author, with 104 full papers (94 in international journals), 12 books or chapters, a cumulative impact factor of 188.875, 2,269 citations, and an H-index of 25. He has delivered over 400 invited lectures and has contributed to the development of national and international clinical guidelines, including the Malaysian Guideline on Hypertension Management and the Malaysian Good Clinical Practice Guideline. Dr. Abdul Rashid has received numerous awards, including the National Young Scientist of the Year Award (1994), Malaysian High Commissioner’s Award for Academic Excellence (1992), and several certificates of excellent service from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Edinburgh, the National Heart Association of Malaysia, and the ASEAN College of Cardiology. He is actively involved in professional societies, having served as President and Council Member of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension, President and Vice President of the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia, and Secretary General of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations. He has also contributed to expert committees, editorial boards, and national advisory panels on clinical research, hypertension, and patient safety. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Abdul Rashid enjoys sports such as football and badminton, as well as leisure activities like camping, hill walking, orienteering, and reading, particularly on history, philosophy, and current affairs.
