Datuk Dr Shaiful Azmi Bin Yahaya is the Chief Clinical Officer and Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Institut Jantung Negara, with extensive experience in invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures and a strong background in cardiology research and education.
Datuk Dr Shaiful Azmi bin Yahaya was born on 9th January 1969 in Perak, Malaysia. He completed his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bendang Siam and King Edward VII (1) Primary School in Taiping, Perak, followed by secondary education at MARA Junior Science College, Kulim, Kedah. He pursued tertiary education at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, earning a B.Sc. (Medical Science) in 1991, an M.D. in 1994, and a Masters in Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 2001. He further enhanced his expertise with non-invasive peripheral vascular training at Texas Heart Institute, Houston, under Dr Neil E Strickman in 2005. Dr Shaiful began his medical career as a Houseman in 1994 and served as a Medical Officer from 1995 to 1997. He was a postgraduate student in Masters in Medicine from 1997 to 2001. He then became a Lecturer in Medicine and Cardiology at the Medical Faculty of UKM from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he joined Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) as a Senior Registrar in Cardiology and subsequently held positions as Cardiology Clinical Specialist, Cardiologist, Consultant Cardiologist, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, and Head of Department. As of December 2024, he serves as the Chief Clinical Officer and Senior Consultant Cardiologist at IJN. Throughout his career, Dr Shaiful has performed a wide range of non-invasive and invasive cardiac procedures, including echocardiograms, transoesophageal, carotid and lower limb non-invasive studies, interventional coronary and heart catheterization, and peripheral arterial, venous, and aortic interventions. He has contributed significantly to research in cardiology, serving as principal investigator, co-investigator, and co-principal investigator on numerous studies and registries such as the CHARM, TRANSCEND/ONTARGET, PARC-AALA, GSR, BIOFLOW III ASIA REGISTRY, REDUCE TRIAL, BIOLUX P-III REGISTRY, and many others. Dr Shaiful is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Malaysian Medical Association, Malaysian Muslim Medical Association, National Heart Association of Malaysia, Malaysian Society of Interventional Cardiologists, and is a fellow of the Asia Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology, ASEAN College of Cardiology, and Society Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions. He has received honors such as Best Overall Student at UKM Matriculation (1987-1988) and Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang, UKM (1999). He has presented papers at international and local cardiology meetings and has been featured in numerous media interviews and articles on topics related to heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and innovative cardiac procedures. Dr Shaiful has authored and co-authored multiple publications in reputable journals, covering topics such as acute coronary syndrome, peripheral intervention, drug-coated balloons, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and complex coronary interventions. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr Shaiful has held various leadership and committee positions at IJN, including Chairman of the IJN Tender Secretariat, Head of Department of Cardiology, Chairman of Emergency Services Committee, Clinical Director of Interventional Cardiology, and member of several key committees related to management, ethics, quality, and patient safety. He has also been involved in training and supervising postgraduate and cardiothoracic surgical education. Dr Shaiful is a frequent participant, speaker, panelist, chairperson, and operator at national and international conferences, workshops, and symposia, sharing his expertise in interventional cardiology, peripheral vascular intervention, and advanced cardiac procedures. His dedication to advancing cardiology practice and education is evident through his ongoing contributions to clinical practice, research, and professional development in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region.
