Dato’ Dr. Tunku Muzafar Shah bin Tunku Jaafar is a Consultant in Geriatrics and General Medicine at Hospital Selayang, where he has served since December 2011. He holds a distinguished academic background, having earned his LRCPI&SI MB.BCh BAO (N.U.I.) with 2nd Class Honours in June 1994, followed by the MRCP (UK) in June 1998. He completed his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Geriatrics and General (Internal) Medicine in August 2005, and furthered his expertise with a Diploma in Ageing, Health & Disease from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in August 2006. His commitment to continuous learning is evident through additional qualifications, including a Diploma in Evidence Based Medicine in Dementia from the Lundbeck Institute, Denmark (February 2014), and the FRCP (UK) in September 2021. Dr. Tunku Muzafar Shah has held several significant clinical and leadership roles throughout his career. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Consultant/Clinical Lead at the Medical Emergency Assessment Unit, University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust from December 2007 to June 2011, and at the Medical Assessment Unit, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust from December 2005 to November 2007. He also worked as a Locum Consultant at the Medical Assessment Unit, University Hospital of Wales from September 2005 to November 2005. Notably, he was the Royal Physician to HRH the 14th King of Malaysia at Istana Negara from December 2011 to 2016. His contributions to research and academia are reflected in numerous publications and presentations, particularly in the field of geriatric medicine. He has co-authored several posters and articles on topics such as fragility hip fractures, osteoporotic hip fractures, statin-associated autoimmune myopathy, and delirium, presented at national and international conferences including the Fragility Fracture Network Malaysia, Asian Conference for Frailty and Sarcopenia, Malaysian Osteoporosis Society, and the Malaysian Congress of Geriatric Medicine. His work has also appeared in journals such as Cureus, Progress in Neurology and Psychiatry, Aging Medicine and Healthcare, and BMJ Case Reports. Additionally, he contributed a chapter to the Handbook of Geriatric Medicine in September 2012. Dr. Tunku Muzafar Shah has played a pivotal role in shaping geriatric medicine at the national and state levels. He has been actively involved in various committees, including the Jawatankuasa Kecil Vaccine Use and Cost, Review Committee for Malaysian Clinical Practice Guidelines, and the Technical Working Group for Older People under the 12th Malaysia Plan Health Research Priority. He has chaired the Subspecialty Subcommittee for Education (SbSC-Edu) in Geriatric Medicine and the Jawatankuasa Latihan Subkepakaran Perubatan Geriatrik Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia. His leadership extends to the state of Selangor, where he has served as Ketua Perkhidmatan Perubatan Geriatrik Negeri Selangor and chaired advisory committees for health and welfare organizations. Within Hospital Selayang, Dr. Tunku Muzafar Shah has contributed to various hospital committees, including the Jawatankuasa Perubatan Tradisional & Komplimentari, Jawatankuasa Kawalan Infeksi & Antibiotik, and the Health Information Management System Executive Committee, where he served as Chairperson. He has also been involved in postgraduate medical education as an Adjunct Professor for Sunway University, invited lecturer and examiner for UiTM, and Honorary Lecturer for UCSI Malaysia. He was a Royal College of Physicians Tutor in Cardiff from 2009 to 2011. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Dato’ Setia DiRaja Kedah (DSDK) in January 2013 and the Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) in November 2021. Dr. Tunku Muzafar Shah continues to be an influential figure in geriatric medicine, contributing to clinical excellence, research, education, and healthcare policy in Malaysia.
