Gianfranco Parati, MD, FESC, is Honorary Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Milano-Bicocca and Scientific Director of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano, with extensive expertise in cardiology, hypertension, and telemedicine.
Prof. Gianfranco Parati, MD, FESC, is a distinguished specialist in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He serves as Honorary Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy. He is also the Scientific Director of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano, a scientific institution for healthcare (IRCCS), and Head of the Department of Cardiology at St. Luca Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, IRCCS, Milan, Italy. Previously, he was the Director of the Postgraduate School of Specialization in Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Prof. Parati has held significant editorial roles, including Past Executive Editor of the Journal of Hypertension, Associate Editor of Hypertension Research, and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, where he was responsible for the Hypertension Session. He is also an editorial board member of many international cardiovascular journals. His research interests are broad and include the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of heart failure and arterial hypertension, blood pressure measurement and variability, sleep and sleep-related breathing disorders, cardiovascular effects of altitude exposure (notably through the HIGHCARE PROJECTS on the Alps, Himalaya/Mount Everest, and Andes), arterial wall properties and stiffness, space research on microgravity (NASA, ESA), telemedicine, digital and mobile health technologies, validated smartphone applications, cardiac imaging, and neural control of the cardiovascular system. Prof. Parati is actively involved in numerous professional societies. He is President Elect and Executive Board member of the World Hypertension League and a member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), European Society of Hypertension (ESH), International Society of Hypertension (ISH), Italian Society of Hypertension (SIIA), and Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC). He has served as Chairperson and Nucleus member of the Council on Hypertension of the ESC, Nucleus member of the e-Cardiology Working Group of ESC, and Past Chairman of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring of SIIA and the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring and Cardiovascular Variability of ESH. He is an Honorary Member of several international societies, including the Latin American Society of Hypertension (LASH), Venezuelan Society of Cardiology, Venezuelan Society of Hypertension, Peruvian Society of Cardiology, Polish Hypertension Society, British and Irish Hypertension Society, Romanian Society of Cardiology, and Hungarian Society of Hypertension. He has also served as Past President of the Italian Society of Hypertension (SIIA), Past President of the Foundation of the SIIA, and Fellow of the ESC. Prof. Parati is a regular invited speaker at annual scientific meetings of the ESC, ESH, EACP, ISH, WHL, LASH, SIC, and SIIA. Prof. Parati has received numerous awards, including the 2004 Lecturer of the Year (Belgian Universities and Belgian Hypertension League), the 2005 Forum P.A. award for excellence in Health Care Services for Telemedicine in Heart Failure, the 2015 ESH “Bjorn Folkow Award and Lecture” for excellence in research on Hypertension pathophysiology, and the 2019 Pickering Lecture Award at the British and Irish Hypertension Society Annual Meeting. He was appointed Honorary Professor at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru, in 2017, and received the 2021 Distinguished Fellow Award of the International Society of Hypertension. Other honors include the Tigerstedt Award from the Finnish Hypertension Society in 2022, the American Physiological Society Award for best 2021 Clinical Physiology paper, the American Heart Association Award for Best Clinical paper on Hypertension 2021, and honorary lectureships and memberships from several national societies.
