Dr. Mugilan Sundarajoo is an Internal Medicine Physician and Interventional Cardiologist at the National Heart Institute (IJN), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with over 14 years of experience and specialized expertise in complex coronary interventions.
Dr. Mugilan Sundarajoo, P.J.K, MBBS (Manipal), AM (Mal), MRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FAPSIC (Asia Pacific), EAPCI (EU), SCCT (US), HFA (ESC), EECC (UK), is an Internal Medicine Physician and Interventional Cardiologist at the National Heart Institute (IJN), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He completed his MBBS at Melaka-Manipal Medical College in February 2011 and subsequently earned his MRCP (UK) from the Royal College of Physicians, London, in April 2017. He also completed the Cambridge A-Levels at Methodist College, Kuala Lumpur, between 2004 and 2005. Dr. Mugilan began his medical career as a House Officer at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital from May 2011 to May 2013, followed by roles as a Medical Officer in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (Occupational Safety Health) and Hospital Jengka, Pahang. He then served as a Medical Officer and Senior Registrar in the Internal Medicine Department at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR), Klang, from December 2014 to September 2017. From October 2017 to May 2019, he worked as a Physician in the Internal Medicine Department at Hospital Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah. In June 2019, Dr. Mugilan joined Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) as a Cardiology Clinical Fellow, where he completed his cardiology training in June 2023, specializing in CHIP/CTO, structural, and peripheral interventions. He is registered under the National Specialist Registry (NSR) for both Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Currently, he serves as an interventional cardiologist at IJN, performing coronary interventions, including CHIP/CTO and peripheral interventions. He is part of the complex intervention team at IJN, the national referral center, and regularly performs 4-8 complex, high-risk cases weekly. He is also actively involved in mentoring younger local and foreign fellows. Dr. Mugilan has extensive experience in the Invasive Catheterization Laboratory, having performed over 1,000 coronary angiographies and angioplasties, including primary, elective, and rescue procedures, CTO, lower limb PTA, and complex CHIP procedures. He has performed live interventional cases broadcast in countries such as Thailand, Singapore, China, South Korea, and Japan. He has completed short attachments in Ulsan, Korea, with Prof Shin for Drug Coated Balloon implantation and with Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram and Dr. Koshi Matsuo for CTO interventions. He is a regular speaker at conferences and workshops, with extensive experience in CTO interventions proctored by world-renowned experts. Dr. Mugilan is a regional Key Opinion Leader (KOL) for Drug Coated Balloons (DCB) and intravascular imaging (IVUS/OCT) and has given multiple interviews on social media and radio about coronary and peripheral artery disease. He has presented at numerous journal clubs, clinical trials, and conferences at both national and international levels, collaborating with leading medical companies. Dr. Mugilan holds several certifications, including MICRA leadless pacemaker implantation, independent intravascular imaging procedures (IVUS and OCT), and independent complex interventions such as CTO/LMS/Bifurcation/Graft disease. He is certified in calcium debulking devices, including Orbital Atherectomy (OAS) and Rotablation. He has also achieved EAPCI Certification in Invasive Cardiology, CT Scan interpretation certification by the Society of Cardiac CT (SCCT), SCMR Level 1 certification, Heart Failure Association Certification (HFA) by the European Society of Cardiology, and EECC-European Examination in Core Cardiology. His professional memberships include the Malaysian Medical Academy, National Heart Association of Malaysia, Royal College of Physicians (London & Edinburgh), Interventional Cardiology Society Malaysia, European Society of Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, European Heart Failure Association, European Association of Preventive Cardiology, and Manipal Alumni. He is also a lifetime member of the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Mugilan has received numerous awards, including the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (Medal of Honour for Service) in 2022, the "Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang" (Excellent Service Award) in 2014 and 2015, and recognition as one of the "Successful People in Malaysia" published by the British Publishing House. He has been awarded Best Case Presenter at CTO PLUS in New York and the German CTO & CHIP meeting (2024), winner of Best Case Presenter at Hong Kong Stent (2024), winner of "Cardiology Got Talent" (2022), and several other accolades in interventional cardiology competitions. His research and publications include analyses on air pollution, case reports on rare diseases, and multiple studies and registry contributions in interventional cardiology. He has published in the Medical Journal of Malaysia, Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC), Journal of Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (JSCAI), European Heart Journal (EHJ), and the International Journal of Cardiology. He has also presented abstracts and posters at major international conferences, including EuroPCR, ACC Asia, and the Korean Society of Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Mugilan is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia, and Tamil.
