Prof. Dr. Imran bin Zainal Abidin is a Professor at the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, with extensive experience in cardiology, research, teaching, and clinical leadership.
Prof. Dr. Imran bin Zainal Abidin is a Professor at the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. He holds an MMED (UM) in Internal Medicine and an MBBS (UM) in Medicine and Surgery, both from Universiti Malaya. His academic and clinical expertise is complemented by a long-standing commitment to medical education, research, and service in cardiology and internal medicine. Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Imran has held numerous administrative and leadership roles. He has served as Programme Coordinator, Head of Unit, and Administrator for Computer Utilisation at University Malaya. He has also contributed as a consultant and committee member for various hospital and university initiatives, including the Dental Faculty Curriculum Review Committee, the acquisition of interventional coronary equipment, and electronic prescribing systems. His involvement extends to national and international committees, such as the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) and the Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (SoPACE) of Malaysia, where he has served as Secretary. Prof. Dr. Imran is recognized for his contributions as an external examiner and lecturer for multiple universities, including University Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, and International Medical University. He has played a pivotal role in the evaluation and accreditation of medical programs and has been actively involved in the organization of workshops, scientific meetings, and curriculum development. His research portfolio is extensive, with principal investigator roles in numerous national and international clinical trials and research projects. These include studies on heart failure, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular interventions. He has led or contributed to projects funded by government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and private organizations, such as Bayer, Merck Sharpe & Dohme, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and Novo Nordisk. His research has resulted in a substantial number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. Prof. Dr. Imran has received multiple awards and recognitions for his service and contributions, including the Certificate of Excellent Service and Excellence Service Award from Universiti Malaya, as well as certificates of appreciation from various national and international organizations. He has also been acknowledged for his role as a speaker and expert panelist at scientific congresses, workshops, and public health forums. In addition to his research and administrative duties, Prof. Dr. Imran is deeply committed to teaching and mentorship. He has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students, including PhD and Master's candidates, and has been involved in curriculum delivery for MBBS, dentistry, and nursing programs. His teaching covers a wide range of topics, from cardiovascular disease and ECG interpretation to clinical rounds and practical examinations. Prof. Dr. Imran's professional service includes membership and leadership in national and international advisory boards, steering committees, and scientific societies. He has contributed as a reviewer for journals, panel assessor for research projects, and advisor for medical device and pharmaceutical evaluations. His expertise is frequently sought for media appearances, public lectures, and community health initiatives.
