Full Biography

Boon Wee Teo serves as an Associate Professor with Tenure on the Clinician-Scholar Track at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and National University Hospital. He is also a Senior Consultant in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, and dedicates more than 50% of his time to research. Dr. Teo completed his medical education at University College Cork, Ireland (National University of Ireland), earning his MB, BCh, BAO, and B Med Sci degrees in June 1997. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (certified in 2003 and re-certified in 2013) and the American Board of Internal Medicine in Nephrology (certified in 2005). His postgraduate training includes serving as an Internal Medicine Resident at Case Western Reserve University from 2000 to 2003 and as a Cleveland Clinic Clinical Scholar/Nephrology Fellow from 2003 to 2006. Throughout his career, Dr. Teo has received numerous honors and awards, including the Singapore Society of Nephrology Achievement Award in 2023 and the Lim Cheng Hong Lectureship Award in 2017. He has also been recognized with the Aodan O Donnchada Memorial Prize for best pediatric project, the Norman Gordon Award for Outstanding Medical Resident, and several research fellowships and transition awards from the National Medical Research Council (NMRC). His mentorship has contributed to his mentees winning Young Investigator and Best Oral Presenter Awards at international conferences. Dr. Teo holds several prominent positions in professional societies. He is the Secretary of the Singapore Hypertension Society (2024-2026), Secretary-General of the Asian-Pacific Society of Hypertension (2022-current), and Vice-President of the Singapore Society of Nephrology (2024-2026). He also chairs the International Relations Committee of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Nephrology, and Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and is a member of the American Society of Transplantation and Asian-Pacific Society of Nephrology. His research interests focus on the clinical and translational application of novel biomarkers for kidney disease and function, the use of multiplex assay platforms for acute kidney injury markers in chronic kidney disease patients, and the development of non-radiolabeled kidney function tests. He is also involved in research on the etiology and epidemiology of renal failure, renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit, and the analysis of glomerular filtration rates and estimating equations in Asian patients. Dr. Teo has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple research grants, including projects on microRNAs in diabetic kidney disease, precision medicine in chronic disease, the use of finerenone in clinical settings, next-generation sequencing in glomerular diseases, and digital imaging for diabetic foot disease. Dr. Teo has an extensive publication record, with research outcomes including presentations, abstracts, and published papers. His work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, Singapore Medical Journal, Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Advances in Nephrology, International Journal of Nephrology, BMC Nephrology, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Clinical Chemistry. His research has contributed to advancements in the estimation of kidney function, the use of biomarkers, and the understanding of chronic kidney disease in multi-ethnic Asian populations. Previously, Dr. Teo served as Head of Division and Division Research Director from June 2016 to July 2022. His ongoing commitment to research, education, and clinical practice continues to impact the field of nephrology both in Singapore and internationally.
