Full Biography

Prof. Dr. Sazzli Shahlan bin Kasim is a distinguished Professor of Medicine, Consultant Cardiologist, and Director of the Cardiac Vascular and Lung Research Institute (CaVaLRI) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Born on 5th March 1977, he has established himself as a leader in cardiovascular medicine, research, and education in Malaysia. His academic journey began with an MBBCh, BAO, BMEDSc (Hons) from the National University of Ireland, Cork in 2001, followed by Membership of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland (MRCPI) in 2005. He further specialized with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) in Cardiology from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2011 and earned a Masters in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences from the London School of Economics in 2020. He also holds accreditations in both Transoesophageal and Transthoracic Echocardiography from the European Society of Echocardiography. Prof. Sazzli’s professional career is marked by significant leadership roles. He is the founding Director of Hospital Al Sultan Abdullah (2016-2024), where he designed, built, and operated a RM599 million project, completing it on time despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. He has served as Head of Medicine and Head of Cardiology at UiTM, and has been a Consultant Cardiologist at UiTM for over 12 years, performing more than 3,000 cardiovascular procedures. His clinical expertise was further honed during his 7+ years as a Specialist Registrar and Consultant in Ireland, and he has been instrumental in pioneering cardiac services in North Selangor. In research, Prof. Sazzli has made substantial contributions, with over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 10 book chapters and conference papers, and as Principal Investigator for over 15 major research projects. He has secured grants exceeding RM5 million for cardiovascular research and has developed innovative digital health solutions such as MyHeart Coach (an AI-powered heart health app), STEMI Calc (a STEMI mortality risk calculator), and MyHeart Rehab (a mobile-based cardiac rehab program). He has also co-developed the UiTM Electronic Medical Record system. His research niche includes artificial intelligence in cardiovascular disease, and he has led numerous national and international collaborations with industry and academic partners. Prof. Sazzli is a dedicated educator, having supervised more than 20 postgraduate students and PhD candidates, and produced 16 cardiologists for Malaysia, with four more in training. He has served as a clinical examiner for MBBS and Master’s programs across multiple universities and was instrumental in creating the Doctorate in Cardiology at UiTM, the first formalized training program in Malaysia. He has contributed extensively to curriculum development, examination vetting, and academic committees, and is a certified trainer in cardiology for the National Specialist Register. His professional affiliations are extensive, including Fellowships in over five international cardiology societies, such as the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI), National Heart Association Malaysia (NHAM), Academy of Medicine Malaysia (FAMM), and ASEAN Federation of Cardiology. He has served as Council Member at NHAM and has been involved in numerous scientific and organizing committees for national and international conferences, including as Scientific Chair for the Asia Pacific Society of Atherosclerotic Vascular Diseases and the National Heart Association Malaysia Annual Scientific Meeting. Prof. Sazzli’s editorial contributions include serving on the Editorial Board of the European Medical Journal Cardiology and as a reviewer for journals such as Heart Asia, International Journal of Cardiology, and others. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Anugerah Penyelidik Terbaik (Best Researcher Award) from UiTM, Gold Awards for innovative digital health applications, and top honors in international health innovation competitions. His service to the university and community is reflected in his leadership of health programs, public awareness campaigns, and advisory roles in national health policy and accreditation bodies. Through his multifaceted career, Prof. Dr. Sazzli Shahlan Kasim has significantly advanced cardiovascular medicine, research, and education in Malaysia, making lasting contributions to clinical practice, academic excellence, and healthcare innovation.
