Full Biography

Dr Iskandar Mirza bin Amran currently serves as a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology and Internal Medicine Physician at Institut Jantung Negara, a position he has held since July 2021. He is also a Council Member of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension for the 2023-2025 session and is actively involved in the Organizing Committee of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension Annual Scientific Congress 2024. Additionally, he contributes to the Pre-Dialysis Education Program as a Nationwide Implementation Committee Member and leads the MedtweetMY CME #Backtobasics division, reflecting his commitment to medical education and public health awareness. Dr Iskandar's clinical journey began after obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and the Royal College of Physician of Ireland in May 2010. He completed his housemanship at Hospital Duchess of Kent from June 2010 to July 2012, followed by roles as Medical Officer at Hospital Tambunan (July 2012 - December 2013) and Hospital Putrajaya (January 2014 - March 2019), where he also served as a Gazettement Specialist. He then advanced to Internal Medicine Physician at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah from April 2019 to June 2021, concurrently heading the Clinical Research Center from July 2019 to June 2021. Dr Iskandar is recognized for his academic achievements, having earned the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland (MRCPI) in April 2018. He has also completed Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support training in 2023, and received the Excellence in Lipidology EACCME certification in May 2023. His language proficiency includes English and Malay, and he is adept at communicating complex medical topics to both professional and lay audiences. His teaching experience is extensive, having served as an Honorary Lecturer at International Medical School (IMU) from 2019 to 2021 and at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Science (CUCMS) from 2018 to 2019. He is a regular speaker and moderator for MedtweetMY Professional Webinar CME since January 2021 and has conducted ECG training sessions at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah from 2019 to 2021. Dr Iskandar has demonstrated strong organizational and procedural skills, including expertise in angiography, angioplasty, echocardiography, pericardiocentesis, peritoneal paracentesis, chest tube insertion, pleural paracentesis, exercise stress testing, cardiac stress testing, Holter monitoring, nuclear scan interpretation, arterial and venous cannulation, bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, knee joint aspiration, and lung function testing. He is an active contributor to public health education, frequently appearing as a speaker and moderator at national and international conferences, webinars, and media interviews. His topics have ranged from heart failure management and cardiovascular disease to diabetes, hypertension, and public health awareness. He has participated in numerous events organized by pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and media outlets, including Novartis, Pfizer, Astra Zeneca, MERCK, RTM, BERNAMA, and others. Dr Iskandar's research portfolio is robust, with presentations at major congresses such as NHAM, Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Congress, Academy of Medicine, Malaysian Thoracic Society, and GUT. His research interests include heart failure, hypertension, acute coronary syndrome, pneumonia, hepatitis in dengue fever, and adrenal insufficiency. He has received several awards, including the Excellence Service Award (2006, 2020), The Funniest Physician Award (2019), and multiple second-place recognitions for research presentations and audits. He is also a prolific writer, with numerous newspaper publications in outlets such as Kosmo, Free Malaysia Today, RICE (Singapore), Dewan Kosmik, and Business Today, covering topics like heart health, hypertension, diabetes, stress, and public health issues. His case reports have been presented at various national research days and congresses, highlighting rare and complex clinical cases. Dr Iskandar's dedication to clinical excellence, research, teaching, and public engagement underscores his significant contributions to cardiology and internal medicine in Malaysia.
