Full Biography

Dr Alan Fong serves as Consultant Cardiologist at the Sarawak Heart Centre, Kota Samarahan, and is also the Head of the Clinical Research Centre at Sarawak General Hospital, Kuching. He graduated from the University of Bristol (UK) in 1999 and was gazetted as a Cardiologist specializing in Interventional Cardiology by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in 2008. Dr Fong holds several prestigious fellowships, having been elected Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology in 2011. He is also a Fellow of the Asian Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology, the Society of Angiography and Interventions, the ASEAN Federation of Cardiology, and the National Heart Association of Malaysia. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Japanese Circulation Society and the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology. He is the current President of the National Heart Association of Malaysia and has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology from 2015 to 2023. Dr Fong is on the Board of Directors for the International Society of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and serves as the American College of Cardiology’s Chair of the Global Heart Attack Treatment Initiative. He is also a member of the Sarawak Research and Development Council. Dr Fong’s research interests focus on Cardiovascular Imaging and Biomarker Research, particularly in acute coronary syndrome, as well as cardiovascular pharmacology. He is a strong advocate for individualized therapies and precision medicine initiatives in contemporary clinical practice. From 2011 to 2016, Dr Fong was the Clinical Lead for the Coronary Care Unit at the Sarawak Heart Centre. He currently chairs the Governance Board of the Malaysian National Cardiovascular Disease (NCVD) Registry and is directly involved in the publication of its reports. He also participates in regional collaborations with similar registries in the Asia Pacific Region. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr Fong holds appointments as Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University of Technology and at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He is actively involved in clinical research, currently participating in over 20 Phase I to IV clinical trials and serving as the National Coordinator for two international multicenter studies. He has conducted numerous investigator-initiated research projects and has published over 40 articles in international journals, including the European Heart Journal, American Heart Hospital Journal, and European Journal of Radiology. Dr Fong has co-written chapters for the National Medicines Use Survey 2005-2011 and contributed to various national guidelines on cardiovascular disease. He also serves as a reviewer for the Malaysian National Medical Research Register and is on the editorial board for various international journals.
