Professor Lim Soo Kun is a Professor of Medicine and Senior Consultant Nephrologist at the Renal Division, Department of Medicine, University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with extensive experience in nephrology, clinical research, and academic leadership.
Professor Lim Soo Kun is a distinguished Professor of Medicine and Senior Consultant Nephrologist at the Renal Division, Department of Medicine, University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Malaya in 1999 and subsequently obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK) in 2004. He furthered his specialization by passing the Nephrology Board Examination (Malaysia) in 2008, became a member of the Academy of Medicine (AM), Malaysia in 2012, and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 2012. Professor Lim began his medical career as a House Officer at Malacca General Hospital from August 1999 to August 2000, followed by a Medical Officer role at Sungai Petani District Hospital, Kedah, and later at University Malaya Medical Centre. He served as a Clinical Specialist and Clinical Nephrologist at University Malaya Medical Centre before joining the Renal Unit, Department of Medicine, University of Malaya as a Lecturer in 2006. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and has held the position of Professor VK7 since August 2022. He has also served as Senior Consultant Nephrologist since 2015. Throughout his career, Professor Lim has been deeply involved in academic and hospital administration. He has served on numerous committees, including the Master part 2 vetting committee, Problem-based Learning (PBL) committees, Organ Transplant Committee, Blood Transfusion Committee, and as Electronic Medical Record Clinical Champion. He has also been the Theme Coordinator for the UMMP “Patient-Doctor” theme, Medical Advisory Committee representative, Drug & Therapeutic Committee representative, and UMSC Departmental Fund Treasurer. He was Head of the Renal Division from 2009 to 2023 and Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine from 2019 to 2023. Professor Lim is highly active in professional societies, serving as a council member and currently President of the Malaysia Society of Nephrology (MSN), and has held roles in the Malaysia Society of Transplantation and the National Kidney Foundation. He has contributed to organizing numerous national and international conferences, including the Annual Congress of Malaysian Society of Nephrology, International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis, International Society for Hemodialysis, and the World Congress of Nephrology. He has participated in various national working committees, including the Malaysia Registry of Renal Biopsy, National Transplant Registry, National Organ & Tissue Transplantation Policy Committee, Malaysian Dialysis Transplant Registry, and the National Renal Registry Advisory Committee. He has also contributed to the development of clinical practice guidelines for chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, and nephropathy. As an academic supervisor, Professor Lim has mentored numerous PhD, Master of Medicine, and Master of Medical Sciences candidates on topics ranging from chronic kidney disease management, lupus nephritis, renal transplantation, and dialysis-related research. He has served as an external examiner for theses and board examinations and has reviewed for several journals and conferences, including the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis, Malaysian Journal of Medicine & Health Sciences, Renal Failure Journal, and the World Congress of Nephrology. Professor Lim is also an editorial board member and subject editor for journals such as the Journal of Clinical and Translational Nephrology and the Journal of Nephrology. He has served on advisory boards and expert panels for pharmaceutical and medical organizations across Asia. His research output is substantial, with an H-index of 15.0 and 4,683 citations as of January 2025. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics including chronic kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation, lupus nephritis, and metabolic complications in renal disease. He has also led and participated in numerous clinical trials and investigator-initiated studies, serving as principal investigator or national lead on many multicenter and international projects. Professor Lim is a sought-after invited speaker, delivering lectures and talks at national and international conferences, public forums, and academic workshops on a wide range of nephrology topics. His leadership, research, and educational contributions have made a significant impact on nephrology practice and education in Malaysia and the region.
