Full Biography

Professor Dr Muhammad Yazid Jalaludin is a distinguished academic and clinician specializing in paediatrics and paediatric endocrinology and diabetes. He currently holds the position of Professor at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, and serves as Senior Consultant Paediatrician and Senior Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, he is the Deputy Dean (Undergraduate Studies) at the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, a role he has held since 2021 and will continue until 2025. He is also a Senior Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at UM Specialist Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Professor Jalaludin's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from University Malaya in 1997, followed by a Masters in Paediatrics (MPaeds) from the same institution in 2004. He further specialized with a Fellowship in Paediatric Endocrinology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in 2009. He is a registered Paediatrician and Paediatric Endocrinologist (NSR 125042). His career at University Malaya Medical Centre began as a House-officer in 1997, progressing to Trainee Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and eventually Professor. He was Head of the Department of Paediatrics from 2016 to 2020. Professor Jalaludin has been actively involved in supervising doctoral, MSc, and Masters in Paediatrics and Paediatric Endocrinology fellows, guiding research on a wide range of topics including metabolic syndrome, vitamin D status, childhood obesity, diabetes, and endocrine disorders. Professor Jalaludin is recognized internationally as an expert in his field. He has served as Scientific Advisor for Novo Nordisk and Merck Sharpe and Dohme (MSD) on multicentre international research projects related to obesity and type 2 diabetes in children. Nationally, he has chaired and contributed to numerous expert committees, including the Malaysian Medical Council, the National Nutrition Action Plan, and the National Strategic Plan for Child Health. He has played a key role in developing clinical practice and consensus guidelines, both internationally and nationally, such as the Asia-Pacific Consensus Recommendations on X-Linked Hypophosphatemia and the Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Management of Obesity and Thyroid Disorders in Malaysia. His research leadership is evident through his role as principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple funded projects, including large-scale studies on adolescent health, obesity, diabetes, and nutrition. He has secured significant research funding from University Malaya, the Ministry of Health, Merck Sharpe and Dohme, Novo Nordisk, and other organizations. Professor Jalaludin is also highly active in professional societies and NGOs at both national and international levels. He has served as President and Immediate Past President of the Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society, Vice President of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society, and Chairman of the Malaysian Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Group. He is involved in advocacy and education through these organizations, contributing to patient and healthcare professional education, diabetes registries, and research initiatives. His impact extends to the media, where he is a frequent contributor and commentator on issues such as malnutrition, childhood obesity, anaemia, and diabetes. He has appeared in television programs, newspaper articles, and online platforms, raising awareness and advocating for improved child health outcomes in Malaysia. Professor Jalaludin's excellence has been recognized through numerous awards, including the Outstanding Asian Paediatrician Award (2024), multiple Excellent Service Awards from University Malaya, the Kesatria (Ambassador) award by the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau, and several travel and poster presentation awards at international conferences. He is a prolific author, with an extensive list of publications in peer-reviewed ISI and non-ISI journals, covering topics such as paediatric diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, nutrition, and endocrine disorders. His work has contributed significantly to advancing knowledge and clinical practice in paediatric endocrinology and child health in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region.
