Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina Haidi Binti Hanafi is a Professor at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, with extensive experience in primary care, research, and academic leadership, and is recognized for her contributions to family medicine and chronic disease management.
Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina Haidi Binti Hanafi is a Professor at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester (2009), an MFamMed from Universiti Malaya (2000), and an MBBS from Universiti Malaya (1992). Her academic qualifications have laid a strong foundation for her distinguished career in primary care medicine and family medicine. Throughout her career, Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina has held numerous administrative and leadership roles. She has served as Head of Department at the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, on multiple occasions, and has been involved in various departmental, faculty, and national committees. Her leadership extends to chairing and coordinating academic programs, curriculum reviews, and serving as an independent assessor for academic promotions. She has also contributed as a committee member and chairperson for national and university-level initiatives, including medical advisory councils and task forces. Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina is actively involved in professional organizations. She is the President of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension since 2021 and holds life memberships in several national associations, including the Malaysian Society of Hypertension and the Family Medicine Specialist Association. She has served as a council member, vice-president, and treasurer in these organizations. Her editorial contributions include serving as an editorial board member for the Malaysian Family Physician Journal and other national publications. Her research interests focus on continuity of care among primary care patients, doctors' self-prescribing behavior, self-management for minor illnesses, analgesic use in primary care, and chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD. She has been principal investigator and consultant on numerous national and international research projects, including studies funded by the Academy of Family Physicians Malaysia, University of Malaya, and international agencies. She has contributed to research on teleconsultation systems for diabetes care during the COVID-19 pandemic, molecular genetics of respiratory pathogens, and chronic respiratory disease surveys in low- and middle-income countries. Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina has an extensive publication record, with articles in high-impact journals such as BMC Health Services Research, Virology Journal, Journal of Global Health, Hypertension Research, NPJ Primary Care Respiratory Medicine, and PLoS ONE. Her work covers a wide range of topics, including asthma care, pulmonary rehabilitation, hypertension management, and qualitative studies on healthcare practices. She has also contributed chapters to research handbooks and presented her research at national and international conferences as an invited speaker, oral presenter, and poster presenter. Her dedication to academic excellence has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Excellence Service Award (2023, 2003), Certificate of Excellent Service (2021, 2020, 2017, 2013, 2012, 2006), and several prizes for oral and poster presentations at scientific meetings. She has also received appreciation for her involvement in community and university activities. Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina is committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. She has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students in primary care medicine, family medicine, and related fields. She has coordinated and taught in various academic programs, including the Master in Family Medicine, MBBS, and nursing diploma courses. Her teaching portfolio includes research ethics, clinical training, and advanced clinical modules. In addition to her academic and research roles, Prof. Dr. Nik Sherina is actively engaged in social responsibility activities, organizing conferences, workshops, and community health programs. She has contributed to public health awareness through media appearances and community outreach, particularly in the areas of hypertension and asthma. Her service to the academic and medical community is further demonstrated by her roles as reviewer, examiner, and assessor for research grants, academic programs, and clinical examinations.
